Amyris biofuel plant in Brazil hits production milestone
Biofuel and chemical maker Amyris Inc. said a fermentation factory in Brazil produced 1 million liters of farnesene in 45 days.
Farnesene is used in diesel and jet fuel, and also in high-performance materials. Emeryville-based Amyris (NASDAQ: AMRS) makes farnesene from sugar cane in six fermentors at the factory. The company, led by CEO John Melo, has produced a total of more than 5 million liters of farnesene. Amyris has also been borrowing money to cover its costs. Earlier this week it set up a $35 million bridge loan to help it make ends meet.
