The meeting has a poster of forest fire area with the only remaining green tree lifted up with it´s roots. The symbolic is of course to illustrate the result of biofuels – dead burning forests.
At the same time a group of American environmental groups joins forces and send by August 27 a letter to Günther Oettinger, European commisoner for energy with copies to the two commisioners for Climate and Environment claiming that European pellets use are destroying wetland forests in South East USA.
Obviously the campaign against biomass for energy is supported and financed by opponents from different positions, including big oil. The winner are of course the traditional suppliers of energy, oil and gas, if the main replacement bioenergy is blocked or capped.
In the 2012.10.17 the EU Commission (EC) presented a proposal of change in strategy called “The proposal for a Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Directive 98/70 EC relating to the quality of petrol and diesel fuels (Fuel Quality Directive) and amending Directive 2009/28/EC on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (RES directive)”.
Via a joint working group a proposal is on it´s way to parliament. The opinion amongst the stakeholders and the member states are very divided. According to time schedule a debate in the European Parliament is planned for sometime in September.
For several years the issue of ILUC Indirect Land Use Change has been pushed by organisations that wants to minimize the use of biomass for energy. After 15 different reports it is however clear that ILUC is not a reliable scientific issue and the initial alarming figures have declined to much more moderate assumptions.
